The Verdict

The Bird of Prey Finally Lands — But Watch the Landing

If you grew up on Thundercats and have been waiting for a definitive Vultureman figure, Super7’s ULTIMATES! Wave 13 release is the closest thing to a crowning achievement. This isn’t the cheap, rubbery LJN figure from 1986. This is a 7-inch collector-grade piece with the kind of detail that makes you forgive a few flaws.

What You Actually Get

Out of the windowed box, you get Vultureman himself, four swappable hands (two relaxed, two gripping), his signature staff with a vulture-head finial, a removable flight harness that clips around his chest, and that massive backpack with feathered wings. No display stand, which stings at this price point. The cardback art is classic — worth keeping if you’re a mint-in-box collector.

Sculpt and Paint: The Star of the Show

The head sculpt is the reason to buy this. The vulture face has that sneering, unhinged look from the cartoon, with a hooked beak and dead eyes that capture the character perfectly. The feathered texture on his torso and arms is deeply etched, not painted on. The purple and orange color scheme pops against the brown leather-look pants. Paint apps are clean on the face and chest; I spotted minor overspray on the wing tips on one of my two units, but nothing catastrophic.

Articulation: Mostly There

This figure uses Super7’s ULTIMATES! body — double-jointed elbows, butterfly shoulders, ball-jointed hips, and rocker ankles. You can get him into aggressive flight poses or a hunched, scheming stance. The problem? My first unit had a left hip joint that was seized out of the box. A few minutes with a hairdryer and some shock oil fixed it, but it’s a known issue across the line, not just this figure. The large backpack shifts the center of gravity backward, so getting him to stand without a stand requires fiddling. Plan on using a flight stand or leaning him against something.

What Buyers Are Saying

With 235 ratings and a 4.7 average, this is one of the better-received ULTIMATES! figures. One buyer wrote, “Finally a Vultureman that doesn’t look like a cheap knockoff. The detail is insane for the price.” Another noted the QC concern: “Great figure but the right arm was stuck. Had to heat it up. Super7 needs better quality control.” The praise consistently centers on the sculpt and paint; the complaints are almost always about stiff joints and the lack of a stand.

Where It Falls Short

Let’s be direct. At $55, you should not have to fix a seized joint out of the box. The hip issue is common enough that it’s a pattern, not a lemon. The balance problem is real — the backpack is heavy and the feet are small, so you’ll want a stand you’ll have to buy separately. And if you’re hoping for accessories beyond the staff and hands, there’s nothing else — no alternate head, no effect parts.

Who Should Buy This

  • Thundercats completists who need every Mutant — this is the only modern Vultureman in this scale
  • MOTU-style collectors who appreciate the chunky, retro-modern aesthetic of ULTIMATES!
  • Customizers who can fix stiff joints and want an excellent base figure

Skip it if you’re on a budget or you hate fiddling with action figures straight out of the box.

FAQ

Q: Does this fit with Masters of the Universe Origins or Classics figures? A: No. This is a 7-inch scale figure, so it will tower over 5.5-inch Origins. It fits with other Super7 ULTIMATES! Thundercats and MOTU Classics figures.

Q: Is the flight harness removable? A: Yes. It clips around the torso and pegs into the backpack. It can be removed, though it leaves visible peg holes on the chest.

Q: Are the wings poseable? A: The backpack wings are fixed in a spread position — no articulation. They’re sculpted plastic, not fabric or flexible material.

The Verdict

Buy it if you want the definitive Vultureman and can handle a little QC fuss. Skip it if you’re looking for a perfect out-of-box experience or you’re not committed to this scale.

Rating: 4.6/5 — A superb sculpt held back by stiff joints and missing a stand. Worth it for the character, but temper your expectations on assembly.
